Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Guangxi Petroleum Prospecting Party in 1959. The naming section is located in the vicinity of Nadang Village, Shangsi County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with its reference section being situated at Banyou of Ningming County.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of grey and yellowish sandstones and feldspar-sandstones, intercalated with purple mudstones and siltstones; being copper-bearing mudstones. Middle part is purple and grey-yellow mudstones, intercalated with siltstones, locally being copper-bearing mudstones. Upper part consists of alternating layers of yellow and light-grey feldspar-quartz-sandstones and argillaceous sandstones in association with purple mudstones, intercalated locally with coal seams, with a thickness of about 1524 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies conformably the underlying Baixing Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Dongli Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed essentially in the Nadang and Gongan areas of Shangsi County extending to Ningming and Banlan Counties. The grains of the rocks in the formation are getting coarser from east to west, with their thickness varying in a range from 1133 m to 2776 m.

Fossils

In the Banyou section of Ningming County it yields bivalve fossils such as Psilunio cf. suni, P. zingyuanensis, P. chaoi, P. sienesis, Cuneopsis sichuanensis, Lamprotula (Eolamprotula) cremeri and Pseudocardinia cf. yongxiensis; and plant fossils as represented by Neocalamites sp., Coniopteris murayana and Phoenicopsis sp.


Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Nadang Fm spanned the Middle Jurassic.
